Polish Supramolecular Chemistry Network Foundation - activities in the past and present

The Polish Supramolecular Chemistry Network was established in 1995, as informal group of Polish scientists active in the field of supramolecular chemistry. In order to be able to organize meetings, conferences, workshops, etc., and handling their financial matters, this network applied for the status of non-profit organization – the Foundation in 1997. Since then, around 60 one-day Subject Microsymposia were organized by Executive Chairman, prof. Marek Pietraszkiewicz, at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, till 2004.

Starting from 1999, one Annual Meeting of the Network had been maintained in Olsztyn till 2003, then in Krutyń, Masurian Lake District (2004-2006). The Meetings were thought to reinforce the research networking within Polish Supramolecular experts, but also foreign colleagues were invited to take part in these gatherings.

In the meantime the Foundation was involved into the organization of bigger international conferences: “International Conference on Supramolecular Science & Technology” in 1998 (Poland), 2000 (Belgium), 2002 (Argentina), 2004 (Czech Republic). Once European funding in the FP5/6/7 Programs became available in Poland, the already existing cooperations within the Foundation found a good ground to apply for financial support in respective calls for international projects. Thus, the Foundation focused on high-level summer schools as a means to disseminate the “cutting edge” knowledge and skills in most advanced aspects of chemistry, material sciences, and physical chemistry.

The Executive Chairman, prof. Marek Pietraszkiewicz, was invited to take part in the FP6 Integrated Project “OLLA” on OLED white lighting R&D for general purposes. One of the tasks was training in the form of International Summer Schools. Three summer schools were planned in 2005-07, but the “OLLA” Project Managers suggested to launch the fourth in 2008, out of the schedule. This additional summer school was also very successful. Heavy organizational workload resulted in developing an outstanding branding of these summer schools. Therefore, after finishing the “OLLA” Project, our Foundation got a recommendation from “OLLA” Managers to offer organizational capabilities to other European Projects.

In this way, the Foundation has organized three International Krutyń Summer Schools in 2009 and 2010 for “OLED100.eu” and “Fast2Light” Projects, and also for ITN M. Curie “FINELUMEN” Project, in which prof. Pietraszkiewicz was involved with his research group. In 2011 the IKSS2011 was jointly organized with Edinburgh University. Even four IKSS-s were launched in 2012. More about the scientific subjects in the next section.
